Well, the cold (finally, real cold) has me out of my Hudson Valley, NY garden. Last week's low temperatures took out the tomatoes, beans and peppers that were, to my amazement, still producing until then. (UPDATE: And flowers, can't forget the flowers. Look what's happened in my Hudson Valley garden this summer ...Huge Brandywine tomatoes. That is a quarter on top to show the scale of size. What a difference from last year when the wet summer and resulting blight left me with ONE edible tomato. Lots and lots of changes in our home garden, which we built new this year in northern Dutchess County, NY. Biggest thing -- the fence is up. Deer and w*#chucks still graze outside the fence but are deterred from the main course (our veggie and flower gardens). Still need to build the gate, which we'll make from redwood. The experts say, in this article, to only buy tomato plants from local nurseries in the Hudson Valley to help avoid a repeat of last year's blight. Sounds like good advice to me. The Hudson Valley now has another fruit orchard. OK, it's a mini orchard. Definitely want to share this Rutgers website, which ranks plants by their level of resistance to deer damage. This will be very useful as we continue to  plan our plantings in the Hudson Valley's "deer alley!" For example, the Buddleia (butterfly bush) will probably be OK outside the deer fence. But tulips and strawberries are just going to be snack food without protection!

Oh gee, I love shopping at Hudson Valley nurseries and garden centers. I especially love when I find places new to me that have unusual varieties or just really good bargains. And I stick to locally grown stock and stay away from imported plants sold at "big box" stores. (Which I've heard is a good practice, in light of last year's problems with blight.) For those who missed the adventures of Phoebe the hummingbird over the past few weeks, an update to my previous post.Her nest was attacked by a lizard, both of her eggs failed to hatch (not necessarily related to lizard attack) and she abandoned that nest. The New York Times has a nice slideshow today of reader-submitted photos of eagles along the Hudson River. Loved seeing this. It's always exciting to see bald eagles -- I've seen adult and juvenile eagles flying near my northern Dutchess County home several times since last fall. At the time, I wrote about "my" eagles and how eagles are showing up regularly in the Hudson Valley.

A week ago I visited the Walkway over the Hudson -- the restored railroad bridge between Poughkeepsie and Highland that just opened as the world's longest pedestrian park.
